After trying out and returning a parade of Cintiq Pro 16s I decided to give the much cheaper competition a try. I picked out an inexpensive Huion GT-191 which arrived today.
I loved the look of the thing from the moment I unboxed it. The 19″ monitor looked beautiful even before powering it on. I didn’t care about the lack of side keys because I always have a keyboard sitting beside me.
I wasted no time in setting the beauty up and powering it up. I installed the drivers. And no matter what I did the Huion software helpfully told me that the device was disconnected.
Huh.
I looked around on the Internet for a solution, but most of the solutions out there involved messing with stuff in Windows which wasn’t helpful to me since I’m on MacOS. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. I tried going with an older version of the driver. I restarted the computer several times. I did a complete power down and back up.
Nothing was working. I was ready to give up on the thing. I was angry. Clearly you got what you paid for, right?
Then I decided to do one final thing. It said the device was disconnected. So I flipped it over and double checked the USB connection on the back of the monitor.
Sure enough, I either hadn’t plugged the damn thing in all the way to begin with or it got jostled loose while I was putting the monitor in place. The software kept telling me the device was disconnected because the device was, quite literally, disconnected.
I sheepishly plugged it back in and so far the monitor has proved to be a lovely little Cintiq replacement. Only it’s not little since the thing is much larger at a fraction of the cost.
I’ll do a full writeup here in a day or two when I’ve had more time to play with the Huion, but so far I’m very happy with the thing. Especially for the price!
Same “problem” here. Thanks for posting about your carelessness and allowing me to realize mine.
No problem! I’m curious. Are you having issues with a blue tinted screen? I ultimately had to return mine because the blue tint was too distracting.
Same problem, if you go into Screen settings in the monitor osd, then color temperature, you can scroll all the way down to the bottom to “user” and set it there.
Yeah, I messed around with the settings on the monitor for a long while and couldn’t get rid of the weird color. I eventually returned that one and got a second GT-191. The colors are still washed out on the second one, but the blue color issue isn’t nearly as bad. Seems like it’s a crap shoot on screen quality with these things, but for what they’re charging I’m not complaining too much.
I’ve been stressing over my pen not working for the past 3 days….. I can’t believe that this was the answer *facepalm* ah human ingenuity at its finest folks
At least it was something easy like this and not a busted pen or tablet. 🙂
Damn. I was hoping to find a magical solution here to the “device disconnected” message on initial setup with my Mac. Alas, the USB is plugged in appropriately…. Even tried different USB ports, to no avail…
Sorry the post didn’t help! You should try another unit from Huion. I get the impression their quality control is a bit iffy. What ya get for that price point I guess.
Aha! The same thing happened to me, thank you for this post!
You are a fucking legend
I am so glad you are willing to share your oops. It saved the day for me! I totally spaced that I had unplugged the USB to plug the printer in (I need more ports!!) and spent hours trying to figure out why my screen would power on, but my pen wouldn’t move the cursor.
Glad I could help! I felt like an idiot when I finally checked the cords on the back, but sometimes the most obvious answer is the answer!
Me, too. It’s back to business as usual. Got the Stream Deck for buttons. Love it.
“Huion “device disconnected” well mine is a H610 it sort of works but not in the Huion software Adobe Ps, Ae, Br, and Lr The pen and tab work (Sort of ) but I still cant program any buttons I may have to go for a Wacom
after all
Barrry
I ended up selling mine and switching back to Wacom. Even when I calibrated the monitor with a Spyder the darks were so dark I couldn’t see detail, and the tinting was always an issue.
i love you, spent 1hour and a half on forums and just realised i unpluged the usb port for something 2 days ago
Glad to help!
3 HOURS WASTED! I’m an absolute moron…
If the amount of traffic this article gets is any indication there are a lot of us absolute morons out there having this problem. 🙂
it works on me,, thank you
